The demand for skilled professionals in phlebotomy has given rise to the availability of a number of phlebotomy classes offered by different schools.
These classes can be taken at vocational training schools, medical schools and other types of colleges.
They are even available online.
Should I Take Phlebotomy Classes Online ?
Phlebotomy classes online while having the advantage of convenience and also teaching the necessary theoretical knowledge do not provide students with the necessary practical training that they require.
These classes are suitable for students who are already working either part-time or full-time as phlebotomists.
It is also quite possible to arrange for hands on training at hospitals or medical clinics and laboratories.
Phlebotomy training is made up of two parts. The first part is the theoretical training.
Here, students learn about the human anatomy with respect to phlebotomy.
There is emphasis on the cardiovascular system and the nervous system as this relates directly to phlebotomy.
The course content will also cover other body systems like the lymphatic, skeletal, muscular and urinary systems.
Other subjects covered include legal and medical issues in phlebotomy.
The practical training portion will include learning how to handle blood samples, how to carry out procedures like venipuncture, arterial punctures, drawing blood, proper handling o f samples, cleaning up spills and using medical equipment.
Students are also taught how to handle patients, carry out a preliminary patient interview, how to clean and prepare the blood collection site, which is the appropriate blood collection site for different types of samples and the appropriate sample collection tools.
Most phlebotomy courses will include lessons in skills such as CPR and first aid.
Phlebotomy Classes – Getting Certified
Because this medical profession is more practical than theoretical, a lot of people get by without ever enrolling at a phlebotomist school.
This is becoming less so. Phlebotomy as a field has gained such popularity that a lot of people are opting to join a class and get certified.
With the increase in the number of certified phlebotomists, employers now prefer certified phlebotomists to non-certified ones.
While it is possible to take certification exams without attending a phlebotomist school it is always better to do so.
The duration of the phlebotomy course will depend of the type of course it is.
The most basic course is the certificate course which lasts from 3 to 6 months. There is the option of taking an associate degree for 2 years or even a bachelor’s degree in phlebotomy which lasts four years.
The eligibility requirement for a certificate course is a high school diploma or a GED.
